Fifty years ago, on October 13, 1962, The Beatles first entered the UK singles chart with “Love Me Do”. The other records in the hit parade on that day were mostly easy listening, country and instrumentals, all genres that would soon be swept away because of Beatlemania.

The Beatles took the shine off everybody else“, said Cliff Richard, whose “It’ll Be Me” was No. 6 that week on the UK charts. “They were so powerful and so successful over here and in America, nobody wanted any instrumental groups. It was all singing groups. We even got down to the low of making a vocal EP, which was an absolute disaster.
